In the fast-paced world of technology, staying ahead of the curve is essential for businesses striving to remain competitive. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a game-changer, promising unparalleled opportunities for innovation and growth. However, for many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the path to AI adoption can be challenging, often hindered by a lack of skills and resources. Recognising this gap, the UK government has launched the Flexible AI Upskilling Fund Pilot, offering a lifeline to businesses eager to harness the power of AI.

At its core, the Flexible AI Upskilling Fund Pilot aims to empower SMEs by providing funding for AI skills training. This initiative, part of the £37.5 million Labour Market Evaluations and Pilots Fund, is designed to catalyse AI adoption and productivity by encouraging employer-led investment in skills development. With evidence indicating that a shortage of AI skills impedes adoption, particularly among smaller companies, the pilot seeks to address this challenge head-on.

One of the key features of the pilot is its focus on match-funding AI training for employees. With £6.4 million in grant funding available for the financial year 2024-2025, eligible businesses can receive support covering up to 50% of training costs. This approach aims to incentivise SMEs to prioritize skills development, ensuring that they have the technical expertise necessary to leverage AI effectively in their operations.

Government launches AI Upskilling Fund

Eligibility for the Flexible AI Upskilling Fund extends to SMEs operating in the UK with 1,249 employees, primarily in the Professional and Business Services sectors. While certain restrictions apply regarding fund usage, eligible expenditures are strictly dedicated to AI skills training procurement. By targeting businesses in sectors ripe for AI integration, the pilot aims to maximise its impact and drive widespread adoption across industries.

Expressions of Interest for the pilot are currently open until 23 April 2024, with the main application window running from 1st to 31st of  May 2024. Managed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the program aims to assess demand and facilitate informed participation. Detailed criteria and updates are readily available on the DSIT website, ensuring transparency and accessibility throughout the application process.
