Microsoft will officially end the support for the Windows 10 operating system on the 14th October 2025.
Windows 10 Support has officially ended
Microsoft will not release any updates or new features into the operating system after this date. Importantly this includes security updates too. This means businesses need to take action now to prepare for the Windows 10 end of support date.
While October 2025 may feel like a long time away, in reality the clock is ticking and the greater the chance of your upgrades hitting unnecessary delays. The upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is not simply a software exercise as in previous upgrade cycles. There are specific hardware requirements for Windows 11, and if you’re running Windows 10 on older hardware, there’s a chance you’ll need to upgrade both the machine and the operating system – and possibly other software you use too.
As more organisations plan their 2025 IT and tech budgets, demand for new systems and support is expected to surge. Proactively addressing this now will enable you to upgrade on your terms, avoiding the last-minute rush.
Why is it important to upgrade?
There are a number of issues that are likely to arise if the Windows 10 operating systems stays in situ beyond the end of support date.
Security Threats
When Windows 10 End of Support hits, Microsoft will officially stop issuing security updates. This means if a new security vulnerability is detected in Windows 10, your systems could be at risk.
Compliance Issues
Operating unsupported systems and software could lead to compliance violations such as with UK-GDPR, since security vulnerabilities could lead to data breaches. This can result in reputational damage and significant fines.
Software / Hardware Incompatibility
We already know Windows 11 will only work on newer hardware. Once out of support, Windows 10 will likely develop compatibility issues with newer hardware and other software as they will be developed to work with the latest and supported operating systems.
Missed Updates
New features and productivity enhancements will only be release for Windows 11 and later operating systems. This means your organisation could miss out on important new features that could impact productivity and performance.
Higher Costs
Maintaining an unsupported system can escalate IT support costs. It can also lead to more system failures, and all the costs that can be associated with the downtime. Microsoft will offer businesses extended support in some situations, but this is likely to be expensive and will only be a short term solution.
There are many other factors to consider too. Windows 11 will eventually reach it’s end of life naturally. We don’t know when that will be, but windows 10 has been supported for 10 years, and Windows 11 was released in 2021. You could infer that the Windows 11 end of support date could therefore be on the (albeit distant) horizon. The longer you leave the Windows 10 upgrade, the more expensive the whole upgrade cycle will be for your organisation.
